Dare Creative New England

Dare Creative™ has moved east! After more than fifteen years of advertising and design in Salt Lake City, Utah, the founder of Dare Creative has moved the company to the Boston area. We are now located in Hyannis, Massachusetts, on beautiful Cape Cod. We’re looking forward to applying our unique marketing strategies and design approach in support of local industries, in the surrounding New England states and for our national and international clients.

Our new neighborhood may be small, but our ideas are larger than ever. In a time when recession is widespread, the Dare Creative advantage as a consortium structure is more relevant than ever. Weather you are in New England, England or anywhere else, Dare Creative has the means, and an affordable solution for your advertising needs.

Green Printing

Posted by admin - June 10th, 2009

Green PrintingIn a changing world, many trends have developed to help us make a positive difference within our industry. Sustainability is nothing new, but it has recently come to the forefront. The advertising industry has historically been one to use an enormous amount of paper annually. This practice hasn’t changed as much as might be expected with the development of digital medias. However, there are many options available to us to help reduce not only consumption, but the amount of harsh chemicals used to produce printed designs. Many resources site general practices for green printing methods. But, I’ve found they all miss the most important step, planning.

Too often we as designers are more focused on the creative job at hand, only to consider productions options after the fact. In order to take advantage of the green options available, careful consideration and planning ahead is a necessary step.

10 General Considerations for Green Printing

  • Consider all the green options available and plan them into the design production.
  • Educate your clients and make recommendations for green options in their projects.
  • Chose recycled papers with no less than 30% post consumer waste. Obviously the higher the percentage the better.
  • Chose uncoated papers. Most coatings use harsh chemicals which are introduced back into the landfills.
  • Consider Alternate Fiber Substrates. There are many papers available made from hemp, cotton and other more renewable sources.
  • Use eco-friendly varnishes and aqueous coatings. Ask your printer if their coatings are environmentally friendly.
  • Chose vegetable based inks rather than petroleum based inks. They not only assimilate back into the environment better, they are more friendly to produce. Some vegetable inks still produce VOCs which are harmful. Be sure to ask that they are VOC free.
  • Choose a printer who recycles their paper waste.
  • Consider making the message brief to reduce design sizes, and send the audience to a website for the bulk of the information.
  • Distribute documents electronically when possible.

Many of these options seem a larger effort for the saving effects they produce. However, when considering the amount of waste produced annually by the industry as a whole, these choices make a huge difference.
